Background Research
We interviewed several custodians from our district about recycling procedures at their schools! The results were shocking! Apparently, cardboard is the main item that is recycled while plastics are dumped and mixed with the regular trash trade. This practice of not recycling plastics increases our carbon footprint which ultimately harms our environment.

By law, schools are expected to recycle but the sad truth is we are either not recycling efficiently or recycling at all.

BEAKER BIN
Along with our app we also have the physical representation of Cash4Trash known as the BB (Beaker Bin).
The BB is crucial to our solution as it is the container that holds the recyclable objects. It is a transparent bin that works with the app to measure the volume of recyclables. Its visually appealing memorable image spreads the awareness of recycling while also advertising Cash4Trash.

The app's interface will convert the volume taken from the bin into mass. With the mass calculated it will accordingly match up with the amount of points awarded.

For example:

6kg of recyclables = 6 CO2 would be equal to 36 points.
The BB is made from the material Lexan which is two-hundred times stronger than our original material, plexy glass.

Failed attempt to create a prototype for the bin.
Survey

If you were paid would you recycle?

Do you think it's important to recycle?

What items you recycle?

If you were paid would you recycle?
Our team raised awareness on our neighborhood by creating surveys, asking people about recycling. Overall the survey (that we made) gave us a clear understanding about what students know about recycling. We sought out to know whether giving an incentive would encourage students to recycle in order to continue our idea of a rewarding system.
